A Visual Love Letter to Storytelling

One morning I was overwhelmed with emotion. Sometimes this happens. A lot actually. I had just read something that moved me and suddenly I wanted to create something that was moving. So I called my friend and former colleague, Josh. After all, we had made a shark video. Not just any shark. A shark who swims through the stacks, makes little kids cry, and plays chess with teens. But this would be different. I told Josh I wanted to make a video with real people talking about real experiences. And I was going to personally fund it. He totally got it. He sent me a proposal. I agreed to his proposal. Later I had a minor anxiety attack. His proposal was completely reasonable but I had a kid going to college. A mortgage. I work primarily for a nonprofit. And I want a kitten. This was nuts. Irresponsible. So I took the day off and on a beautiful October morning, Josh arrived off the ferry with a freshly purchased cart filled with video gear and we spent the next 8 hours filming people talking. The following is the end result. Beautifully filmed and edited by Josh. He took my few scattered-brained “vision notes”, some examples of things I love, and created a visual love letter of people and stories. This project is dedicated to them and to all storytellers - past and present - who have or have had something to share. This film is dedicated to them. And to my family. And my friends who are my family. And to my sons. Take a chance. Say yes to the proposal and go produce something that moves you. And never stop sharing stories.
